How To Secure Your WhatsApp Account From OTP Scam?

People have been notified by long-time cyber professionals and even government and financial authorities never to share one-time password (OTP) with anyone on the mobile. And still, more are putting an end to malicious cyber’ strategies and losing hard-earned money or confidential data. Now, WhatsApp subscribers are being bamboozled by malicious operators at the last point. The true agenda is identical. They act as buddies or a distressed fellow citizen who has mistakenly sent the incorrect phone number (yours) with a 6-digit OTP code. They request the victim to hand it over to them so that an immediate money transfer can be done. They even provide emotional reasons for instant recognition, that they have to cover medical expenses or education costs. And if it is, they can take over the WhatsApp account on the website and access the mobile numbers of your friends and even photos, if posted with a valued one on the messenger app, financial details. And when the black man will take care of the contact information and perform the same prank on your friends and family members, this will result in a negative spiral. We really aren’t aware that we emphasise this enough but WhatsApp users or holders of any mobile phone never share an OTP with someone through SMS or on a phone call. It is also advisable to set up two-factor encryption to secure your account from being taken over by cybercriminals.

Procedure to activate two-step security authentication on WhatsApp

  • Open the WhatsApp app in your mobile phone and navigate to ‘Settings’.
  • Now tap on ‘Account’ > Two-step verification > Enable.
  • Now enter a strong six-digit PIN of your choice and confirm it.
  • In case you want to add your email, add the same on the space provided or else tap on ‘Skip’
  • Adding an email address is strongly advisable as this enables you to reset the two-step authentication and helps to secure your account too.
  • Tap ‘Next’, save your email address and you are done

Fraudsters acting as Income Tax representatives or bank employees use emails and phone calls to fool users for disclosing their confidential data.
