The Union Finance Ministry has said that 40 crore 35 lakh accounts have been opened so far in the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which was implemented six years ago, in which Rs 1.3 lakh crore has been deposited.
The scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address on 15 August 2014 and it was implemented on 28 August of the same year.
Prime Minister Modi wrote in a tweet on Friday, “On this day, six years ago, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was implemented with the intention of connecting people not connected with the banking system to banks. This will bring a big change. The effort proved to be the basis of many poverty alleviation efforts, which benefitted crores of people. ”
The Prime Minister said in another tweet that because of this scheme, the future of many families has been secured. A large section of the people taking advantage of this are from rural areas and are women.
According to the Finance Ministry, 63.6% of the PMJDY scheme account holders are from villages and 55.2% accounts are from women.
The Finance Ministry said in its statement that the government is now planning to provide insurance facility to the account holders of this scheme, and will consider to include eligible account holders in the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. Information has been given to banks.
