When Indira Gandhi asked Sam Manakshay-are you going to coup?

New Delhi: Sam Manekshaw, the great hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak War, was an official who could not dare to bite. He had categorically told the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi that the army is not ready for war now. Indira Gandhi then had to give her a few months to prepare. When the Indo-Pak war broke out in December 1971, Manekshaw gifted India the most spectacular military victory ever.

Sam Manekshaw received many honours for his heroism. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1972 before he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He was given the post of Field Marshal in 1973. On June 27, 2008, Sam Manekshaw said goodbye to the world forever.

Sam Manekshaw’s full name was Hormuzji Framdi Jamshedji Manekshaw and was born on April 3, 1914 in Amritsar. Since childhood, his loved ones used to call him Sam Bahadur because of fearlessness and bravery. Sam Manekshaw was the only man who dared to refuse to obey the Prime Minister. In fact, Indira Gandhi wanted the war against Pakistan to be fought in the month of March. But Sam knew that preparations for the war were not complete, so he refused to fight Indira. Although he was unhappy with Indira Gandhi, he still considered it better to give extra time for preparation. Sam told them that our army is not ready yet, if the war is fought now, they will lose. Don’t you want to see victory?

Sam Manekshaw had become very popular after India’s victory in the Bangladesh War. Then there were rumours that they could be a coup. Then Indira Gandhi called her and asked her: “Heard that you are going to be a coup. Is that true?’ said Sam Manekshaw: ‘What do you think? You consider me so incompetent that I can’t even do it! ‘ Then he stopped and said, ‘Look, Prime Minister, we both have some similarities. For instance, both of us have a long nose but my nose is a little longer than you. Such people do not like to have a leg in their work. As long as you allow me to do my job with freedom, I will not put my nose in your work.”
