While issuing a warning on Tuesday, the Transport Department said that if old vehicles are found plying on the road, then necessary penal action will be taken against the vehicle owner.
However, the Transport Department has ruled out starting any campaign against the old vehicles at the moment. But still the department will continue to take strict action on old vehicles to deal with the problem of pollution. In the new Vehicle Act, there is a provision for a fine of Rs 10,000 on old vehicles and confiscation of the vehicle and getting it scrapped. Explain that under the new scrapping policy , the rules related to scrapping of old vehicles have been implemented. Under this, you will have to get your vehicle scrapped only by going to a recognized valid scrapper. Along with this, you will also have to get your vehicle deregistered by visiting the RTO office.
Only 2879 vehicles scrapped in Delhi since 2018
Under the new Motor Vehicle Act, the Transport Department had implemented rules related to scrapping of vehicles in 2018. Along with this, an authorized scrapper was also appointed. But its speed is very slow. In the last 3 years till 31 May 2021, only 2879 vehicles have been scrapped. According to the department, there are more than one crore vehicle registers in Delhi out of which 70 lakh vehicles are on the road. Out of this, the number of petrol vehicles older than 15 years is close to 35 lakhs. At the same time, about 3 lakh diesel vehicles have completed their stipulated 10-year period.
how to scrap old vehicle
- The owner of the old vehicle will have to apply online or call the scrap dealer
- The scrapper will pay the prescribed scrap value and pick up the vehicle from the vehicle owner’s home.
- The validity of the documents will be checked before starting the process of scraping.
- The cut piece of chassis number shall be kept safe by the scrapper.
- The scrapper will issue a scrapping certificate, which will contain all the details.
- Based on this, the vehicle owner will have to get his vehicle deregistered by going to RTO.
- For the new car this old registration number can be demanded for issuance.
51 lakh vehicles 20 years old
There are 51 lakh light vehicles in India which are more than 20 years old. There are 34 lakh light vehicles which are more than 15 years old. There are around 17 lakh medium and heavy commercial vehicles without fitness certificate which are more than 15 years old, old vehicles cause 10-12 times more pollution than fit vehicles and are a huge risk to road safety.
