Banks will stop issuing 2 thousand notes

RBI has said that all banks will stop issuing bank notes of Rs 2000 denomination. Banks maintaining currency chests (CCs) shall ensure that withdrawal of denominations of Rs 2000/- is not permitted from the CCs. All notes of this denomination received by banks will be immediately sorted through Note Sorting Machines (NSM) for accuracy and authenticity and deposited in currency chests under the linkage scheme. The instructions contained in the RBI Master Direction dated April 03, 2023 on Detection, Reporting and Monitoring of Counterfeit Notes shall be scrupulously followed.

2,000 fake notes will be recognized by the machine

The authenticity of the notes tendered over the counter will be checked through machines. Similarly, bank notes directly received through bulk tenders at bank offices/currency chests will also be screened through machines. No credit is to be given to the customer’s account for counterfeit notes, if any, found in the tender received over the counter or at the back-office/currency chest. In any case, the counterfeit notes will not be returned to the tenderer or destroyed by the bank branches. Failure of banks to impound counterfeit notes would be deemed to be willful involvement of the bank concerned in circulation of counterfeit notes and would attract penalty.

Fake notes will be confiscated

Counterfeit currency refers to counterfeit money or currency notes that are made illegally and used to defraud people or defraud the economy. Notes determined as counterfeit will be stamped as “Counterfeit Note” and impounded in the format prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India. Each such seized note shall be entered in a separate register under authentication. The Reserve Bank of India had introduced new design banknotes in the denomination of Rs 2000 as part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series.

Mangalyaan is made on 2,000 note
